If you have an offline presence such as a shop premises, it’s easy to forget to collect sign ups when someone comes into your store.

But this can be one of your most effective tools to build your email list with engaged interested subscribers – chances are they will have just purchased from you (for example).

If this happened online, would you miss that opportunity to gain an opt in and grow your email list? No! So why waste this fantastic opportunity offline?!

Here are some of the encounters I have had recently with email sign ups on the high street….

On a sunny Saturday afternoon I found myself wandering the aisles of my local Mothercare looking for the perfect gift for a good friend expecting a baby girl in the next couple of weeks.

I don’t have children myself, so Mothercare is certainly not my normal stomping ground and my poor boyfriend was stuck closely to my side! After we finally managed to choose a gift, we got to the till to pay for our chosen purchases.

Upon handing me my receipt, the lady at the till then asked a question that I don’t hear asked very often… “Would you like your receipt emailed to you?”.

Fantastic! Of course I said yes!

And then the follow up question…. “Would you also like to receive our offers by email”.

Fabulous! Well done MotherCare!

I also popped into KFC to grab a sneaky treat the following Saturday and low and behold on their countertop notice and receipt, I found a call to action to get 20% your next order. All you had to do was simply visit a microsite and go through a customer experience survey which of course included an opt in:

Another great example comes from Links of London. I spotted this whilst wandering past their shop window a few days ago.

The only thing that would have been better here would have been to add a URL to the sign or a QR code so that users could immediately complete the action on their mobiles and even go onto enter the store and make a purchase using their newly acquired discount code.
